that there are skewed polls. paul ryan was the latest one to join on the bandwagon last night talking about wisconsin. >> i don't believe that particular poll. i won't get into the methodologies about it. >> they weren't talking about a specific poll in na statement, which sounds like it doesn't matter to him which poll it is but it's tainted. what's your take on this? we've heard it a lot over the last 48 hours. >> look at all the polls. if you go to realclearpolitics.com, for instance, in every poll in every swing state the president is a hit, it's hard to find a poll in a swing state where romney is leading. if you look at the data right now, we're looking at an election that looks more like 2008 than 2004. the president is ahead in almost every swing state, whether you look at gallup pews or pugh poll or nbc news polls, the president is far ahead right now. romney does five points nationally in some big swing state that romney does need a big move in the debates to change the game. anytime a campaign says a poll is wrong, it's a sign they're not doing well from my experience doing politics. >> su

"new york times" columnist paul krugman wrote, "can i say that even though i'm not exactly a fan of mitt romney's, this is just bad behavior?" from liberal commentator taylor marsh, "simon's piece spread like wildfire and calling a gigantic ripple." they weren't alone. simon clarified in editor's note he believes paul ryan calls mitt romney something more dignified than "stench." both presidential candidates promise they will not increase taxes on the poor and middle class but will make a dent in the deficit. this evening we look at romney's plan which has been called mathematically by one group and the president and his campaign have been all over it. chief national correspondent

's final two debates. i asked anna if paul ryan's remarks are part of the deliberate strategy. >> i don't know if it's a smart strategy, but i know it's a realistic strategy. obviously they are down in the polls and they have to do retweaking. i think he is being humble and realistic, and he's admitting there have been mistakes made, and so i think it's a good thing. they do need to eat a little humble pie and admit that things are not all rosy. >> peggy said it was crucial. do you see the debate is crucial? >> the first debate is the only debate that matters at this point. if romney cannot hit obama with what he has to say in the first -- these have not been gaffes by mitt romney. this is mitt romney. this is not the first time he talked about not caring about people less fortunate than him. he said he was not concerned about the very poor. this is not like a misstep. it's a consistent theme with him and it's up to the voters to see if they agree with him. it's not gaffes, it's him. >> how does mitt romney have to appear. does he have to be aggressive? what is the right tone? when we s
